Pensioners in Delta State are to smile soon as Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has promised to accelerate the implementation of their 142 percent entitlement in the state.
Dr. Uduaghan who made the promise when the Delta State Council of Nigerian Union of Pensioners led by its chairman Chief Mathias Ubiebi paid him a courtesy call in Asaba said the state government has already set machinery in motion to implement the package.
He said he has interest in the affairs of pensioners and would continue to take actions that would make them comfortable.
Emphasizing that pensioners deserve better treatment because of their meritorious service to the state, Governor Uduaghan said all their requests would be attended to without delay.
“ I have interest in your affairs and I promise to continue to do things that will make you comfortable. You have contributed to the growth of the State and you deserve better treatment,” he said.
Dr. Uduaghan however canvassed for their support in the crusade for the one man one vote campaign in the country.
He said that their involvement in the campaign was important because they are men of integrity whose opinion would be well respected in the society.
Describing them as elder statesmen who wield a lot of influence at the grass-root, the governor said “you are very important in the society and I believe people will respect your contributions in this one man one vote issue. Tell people in your area that one man one vote is practicable and they should embrace it.”
Dr. Uduaghan explained that it was only the philosophy of one man one vote that would guarantee true democracy and a free and fair election.
He said there was no alternative to it as any other system will be counter-productive and enthrone rigging and confusion.
Speaking earlier the state chairman of Nigerian Union of Pensioners Chief Mathias Ubiebi appealed to the governor to implement the 142 percent increase to pensioners because it was long overdue.
Commending the governor for approving the arrears from stagnation he implored him to appoint pensioners into boards.
The chairman who said pensioners were well exposed and have the capacity to serve in boards promised the support and solidarity of the association to the state government.
