The Delta State Urban Bus Transit Scheme has been strengthened with the introduction of additional new 200 air-conditioned buses into the state transport system.
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan while speaking at the inauguration of the buses in Asaba, said the vehicles will be managed by Delta Line Transport Company and Agofure Motors.
Governor Uduaghan further said both transport companies will employ drivers for the buses and went on to commend them for properly managing the 100 buses that were handed-over to them in July last year.
Dr. Uduaghan said the procurement of the buses will create employment opportunities for Deltans and warned the operators of the buses to restrict their movement to only the routes allocated to them to ply.
He also warned that he will personally stop any bus plying the wrong route to check such abuses.
The governor who promised to ensure that the vehicles do not disappear warned those with ulterior motives to steer clear of the vehicles. Dr. Uduaghan said it was to ensure that the vehicles were in safe hands that he shared the vehicles between Agofure Motors and Delta Line.
Explaining that past experience has taught him to be cautious he said “some people allocated to themselves some of the first fleet of taxi cabs this government bought. They converted these vehicles to their personal use and God is seeing them. We leave them in the hands of God.”
He said he was targeting 1000 buses for the transit scheme by the time he leaves office, but added that the buses will be made to ply designated routes only as their purchase was intended to benefit the masses.
Governor Uduaghan who used the occasion to enumerate on-going projects embarked upon by his administration, assured Deltans of better days ahead.
He announced that the state Micro Credit Scheme will be strengthened adding that the sum of N1.5 billion has been earmarked for the programme this year.
Chairman and Editor-in –Chief of THISDAY Newspapers, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena who was guest of honour on the occasion lauded the developmental initiatives of Governor Uduaghan, saying his economic policies have brought positive changes to the state, adding that he deserves the support of Deltans to actualize his policies and programmes in the state.
He called on politicians across the country to jealously guide the country’s political institutions in order to sustain and benefit from dividends of democracy.
“It is very rare for me to come to any state to commission any event; I have come because Uduaghan is performing. I am not very free with words but I can say that in Delta State, we have a very steady and safe hand as our governor. He is very calm and unassuming; It is my privilege to be here to advance the dream for a fully integrated Delta State,” he said.
Earlier in a welcome address, the Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Lawrence Osiegbu, said with the commissioning of the buses, the yearnings of the people will be met as the vehicles will be deployed to all parts of the state.
While saying that government will encourage private participation in the transport sector, Osiegbu said the Directorate of Transport has concluded plans to ease movement in the creeks by providing mass-transit boats, jetties and waiting sheds.
The commissioning of the 200 buses is a fulfillment of an earlier promises made by the governor in July 2009 while commissioning the first batch of 100 buses.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers and witnessed cultural displays.
