| GOVERNOR EMMANUEL UDUAGHAN (MIDDLE) FLANKED BY CORPS MARSHAL OF THE FEDERAL ROADS SAFETY CORPS, MR. OSITA CHIDOKA (LEFT) AND NATIONAL COORDINATOR, SPECIAL MARSHALS OF THE FRSC, REV. FR. EMMANUEL OTIABA, DURING A COURTESY CALL ON THE GOVERNOR AT GOVERNMENT |
• SEEKS FRSC’S ASSISTANCE
Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has said drivers in the convoy of governors and other important personalities are reckless and called on the Federal Roads Safety Corps to assist in their training.
“Some of the convoy drivers are reckless and take advantage of being in the convoy to be irresponsible and misbehave in movements. It is even worse sometimes when the Governors are not in the convoy,” Dr. Uduaghan said.
He said the training is to certify them fit and issued with certificates of proficiency before they can be allowed in convoys of important personalities.
Dr. Uduaghan who stated this when the Corps Marshal of the Commission, Mr. Osita Chidoka paid him a courtesy call in Asaba said some of the FRSC’s Special Marshals in the state are overzealous and exercise more powers than they should and advised the Commission to organize workshops and seminars for them.
He said the special Marshals should know the limits of their power, adding that such knowledge will check their excesses.
The Governor who frowned at the slow rate at which motorcycle riders are complying with the use of crash helmets urged the Corps Marshal to enforce the use of crash helmets in the state.
He said the use of crash helmets has the potential of reducing the number of deaths among motorcycle riders and urged them to cooperate with the commission in the interest of their lives.
Promising that he will do his best to embark on massive road construction, Dr. Uduaghan said: “On our part, we are going to embark on massive road construction and continue to increase street lights on our roads. This will make the roads motorable and drivers will see clearly in the night”.
He praised the Corps Marshal for doing a good job even as he said that Mr. Chidoka’s performance shows that we have young men who can excel in their jobs.
The Governor promised to look into the request of the commission for vehicles and a befitting office.
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Osita Chidoka in his remarks said plans were underway to revoke all driving licenses being held by commercial drivers in the country.
Mr. Chidoka said the present system of issuing driving licenses is faulty and assured that a new system that will emerge soon will be faster and shall erase the short comings in the present process.
He regretted that due to the faulty system only about 3.5 million drivers’ licenses have so far been recorded as issued arguing that with the population of the country we should not have less than 20 million drivers licenses in our records.
The Corps Marshal said the new system will bring together all the stakeholders such as the VIO, Licensing offices and the FRSC and make the exercise less cumbersome.
He disclosed that accidents have been occurring more frequently on our roads since the beginning of the year and urged states in the Federation to play crucial roles in the management of safety and accidents.
Describing the trend as dangerous, Mr. Chidoka said effort should be made by all to reduce night journeys.
Highlight of the visit was the decoration of the Governor as the leader of the Special Corps marshal in the State.
