LET’S BE RESOLUTE IN OUR SUPPORT FOR JONATHAN, UDUAGHAN TELLS NIGER DELTANS

Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has appealed to the people of the Niger Delta region to be united and resolute in their support for the acting President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan as the Federal Government strives to bring development to the region.

Speaking in Lagos on Monday at a grand reception organized by Ijaws in Lagos in his honour, the Governor said that it was the collective responsibility of the people of the region to support the Federal Government and the Acting President in particular.

“It behooves on us as a people to be united in support of the Acting President and the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle the challenges facing us as a region and as a country”, he stated.

Dr Uduaghan said that the State Government has re-doubled its efforts to improve the welfare of the people, adding that pregnant women in the state now enjoy free medical services while children under five years old will, in two weeks time begin to enjoy free medical services.

Besides, he disclosed that as part of measures to increase access to the State Micro-Credit Scheme and accelerate development of Small Scale Industries in the State, that N1.5billion has been voted for the scheme this fiscal year.

The Governor commended the Ijaws in Lagos for the grand reception and the honour done him, stressing that it was a challenge to do more for the people

The chairman of the occasion and former Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Blessing A. Clark commended Governor Uduaghan for bringing development to the Ijaw areas and peace to Delta State.

Ambassador Clark however called for the improvement in water transportation to enable the Ijaws benefit from the dredging of the river Niger.

Renowned activist and coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group (IMG) Comrade Joseph Evah, who facilitated the reception, explained that the event was meant to appreciate the Governor’s efforts in developing the Ijaw areas of the State.

In particular, he commended the Governor for the campaign against environmental degradation and climatic change, and promised that the Ijaws would support Dr Uduaghan for another second term in office.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of an award to the Governor for promoting peace and security in the Niger Delta region

Dignitaries present at the event were Mr. Timi Alaibe, Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta; Dr Chris Ekiyor, president Ijaw Youth Council; Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo and the wife; Hon. Kingsley Kuku, former member Ondo State House of Assembly; Pastor Power Z. Aginighan, Executive Director, NDDC; Speaker of Delta State House Assembly, Rt Hon Martins Okonta.

Others include members of the House of Representatives from the State, members of the State House of Assembly and over 150 Ijaw socio-cultural groups based in Lagos.
