UDUAGHAN URGES DEVELOPMENT JOURNALISM

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has called on members of Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) to practice development journalism in line with the economic needs of society and the nation.
Dr. Uduaghan who made this call during a courtesy visit by the state Executive Council members of the Delta State Chapter of the NUJ in Asaba said the press should focus on the development of the state for a healthier society.
He said the press should give priority to information and news linking other developing countries which are evolving geographically, politically and culturally.
The Governor also admonished the union against rumor mongering and charged journalists to be objective in their reports.
He advised the NUJ to device means of eliminating quacks from the profession and ensure that its ethics were religiously observed.
Governor Uduaghan assured the body that the state Government will reposition the state owned media houses, promising to build a new television studio for DBS Warri and complete work on the new DBS Asaba studio station, adding that the media houses in the state will compete favourably with other media stations in the country.
He commended the staff of the station for commitment to duty despite the deplorable situation of the station and called on workers in other state owned media to be alive to their duties, saying “it is possible to have a state Newspaper if the workers are committed; I promise you that the state is working on it”.
The Governor commended the state Council of the NUJ for resolving its crises saying “I am happy you have buried your hatchet and resolved your differences. A divided house can never stand. I appeal to you to reach out to your members that were bruised as a result of the crisis for the growth of the union”.
He assured the NUJ that he will look into the NUJ Secretariat land issue, stressing that it deserves a Secretariat in a strategic position in the state. “I am looking into the land issue, it is important that NUJ should have its state Secretariat in a strategic position in the state. It is my responsibility as NUJ South South Patron to ensure that the union move forward in my state”.
Earlier, the state Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Osita Biose informed the Governor that the lingering crisis in the union has been resolved and will therefore focus on issues of development and unity.
He appealed to the state Government to float a contributory Trust fund and approved land for the development of what he called a journalist village.
Mr. Biose appealed to the Governor to provide the union with a Salon car and 18 – seater bus for effective running of the union and commended him for previous support and assistance to the union.
