Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has charged local government council chairmen to embark on projects that would touch on the lives of the people with a promise to monitor the councils to ensure their performance.
The Governor who spoke at Uzere while commissioning a cassava processing factory, local government legislative building, Earth moving equipment and an ultra modern chairman’s quarters located at Oleh, headquarters of Isoko South Local Government Area, said monitoring the performance of local governments was necessary to spur those not doing well to action and accelerate infrastructure development at the grass root.
He said that effective monitoring will also give his administration the yardstick of measurement and access the achievements of individual local governments and either criticize or praise them.
Dr. Uduaghan said the performance of local governments was important to his administration, as it will lighten the burden of leadership and improve the living standard of the people.
“When local governments are doing well the problems of a state government will reduce. In fact when a local government maintains peace and security, the security problem of the state government will be over in that area,” he said.
The governor described the cassava processing factory built by the local government as a star project and great accomplishment which he believes will empower women and increase their earning power.
Explaining that the factory will encourage food production, Dr. Uduaghan said it will reduce stress and hazard in garri production.
The governor said the projects executed by the local government chairman are of great challenge to the state government and other local governments in the state.
Dr. Uduaghan therefore urged local government chairmen in the state to embark on projects that will empower their people and improve their living standard.
“I charge local government councils to embark on people oriented projects and improve the living standard of the rural populace. Empower your people and create employment opportunities for them,” he said.
The chairman of Isoko South local government Hon. Askia Ogieh in his speech said the cassava factory was made up of a cassava starch plant which was capable of processing 50 tons of raw cassava and a garri plant which can process 24 tons of raw cassava per day.
Ogieh also said that the earth moving equipment his council bought which include a caterpillar bulldozer, a grader and a loader will help his administration improve the infrastructure and socio economic development of the local government.
He said he was being driven by his dream to improve the living standard of his people and promised to embark on more people oriented projects.
The chairman who was full of praise for the governor believed that the people of Isoko South deserved to be enriched with the dividends of democracy.
