DON’T BRING SHAME ON US, UDUAGHAN TELLS DELTA FOREIGN SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS GOVERNOR EMMANUEL UDUAGHAN (RIGHT) WITH CHIEF WELLINGTON OKRIKA,WHILE ADDRESSING THE BENEFICIARIES. Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has told the beneficiaries of the state Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) foreign scholarship scheme not to bring shame to the state. The beneficiaries are expected to jet out of the country tomorrow for their post-graduate programme in the United States of America. While addressing them in Warri at the weekend, the governor charged them to be good ambassadors of the state at all times. The Governor said;"It is very important that you are good ambassadors of your community, good ambassadors of your local government, good ambassadors of your state and good ambassadors of your country. We all know that few weeks ago, we had this young boy who has caused a lot of embarrassment, not only to his family, but to this country, his unfortunate action is a number one issue in the world right now." According to the governor who was flanked by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Martin Okonta and DESOPADEC chairman, Chief Wellington Okirika; "That incident was very avoidable and that put a moral responsibility on you that for whatever little action you take that will bring shame not just only to you, not just to your family, not just to your state, not even just to your country but to the whole of humanity." "You are going there to acquire knowledge, please, acquire your knowledge and come back with your head on your shoulder, do not come back with your shoulder alone. American society or even the advanced world can be tempting, you can get there and you fall into a lot of temptation that will give you embarrassment. Just try and do not fall into temptation; hold on very firmly to God," Governor Uduaghan said. "The programme is not for you to get to America and disappear, it is for you to get to America and finish your programme. If you disappear and say you are no longer going to school and you are going there because you want to go and work, then you would have missed it. I want to appeal to you take to this programme seriously." While saying that the programme was a pilot one, the governor warned that; "If you make it fail, then we will not go into it any longer. If you make it succeed, then we will be encouraged to continue with it." Chairman of DESOPADEC Chief Wellington Okirika had earlier said that of the over 1,000 students that applied for the programme, about 100 made it and commended Governor Uduaghan for his support for the programme. "Your Excellency, we appreciate all the wonderful support we received from you in our quest to ensure that we empower the youths adequately. When we advertised for this programme, about 1,000 students applied, at the end of the day, we have 100 of them set for the programme in the US."
