GOVERNOR WINS CHEVRON COMMITMENT TO END GAS FLARING IN NIGER DELTA

GOVERNOR EMMANUEL UDUAGHAN (LEFT) CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGAR, DURING THEIR MEETING ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN LOS ANGELES RECENTLY.
With just a few days to the Global climate summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, the multinational oil giant Chevron has agreed to stop gas flaring from all its operational sites in Delta State in the first quarter of 2011. The company also pledged to render necessary assistance in area of litigation and adaptation.

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who got the commitment of Chevron take a decisive step in stopping gas flaring in the Niger Delta in a telephone conference in Warri at the weekend hailed the decision of the Oil firm as a victory for the environment.

Governor Uduaghan had engaged top officials of Chevron in its California headquarters as well as those of California Environmental Protection Agency in a one hour telephone conference which focused on how to protect the Niger Delta environment during oil exploration activities.

Fielding questions after the conference, Dr. Uduaghan said there is an urgent need to tackle headlong the environmental problems generated by oil exploration in the Niger Delta region.

He said ‘there is a clear and present need to bring to international attention the pollution caused by oil companies operating in our area’.

Continuing the Governor said, ‘we need to put pressure on oil companies, to stop polluting the environment, we need to put pressure on them to stop gas flaring and we need to put pressure on them to stop polluting our land’.

The Governor who is billed to attend the Global climate summit said the operations of the oil companies have adversely affected the traditional occupation of the people such as fishing and farming.

According to Governor Uduaghan, “Chevron and other Oil companies have to deal with these key problems to give the people a new sense of belonging.”
