Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has commiserated with families of six palm oil traders who lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident on the Effurun, Delta State axis of the East/West Highway.
The women were returning home after purchasing their stock in trade in Rivers State when a tanker, marked Gombe XE 399 GME, ran into and leveled their 18-seater bus marked Lagos AA 49 FST at the popular DSC Roundabout, Effurun, in the state.
Uduaghan also frowned at the razing of a police station near the scene of the incident, vowing that those responsible for the accident and the razing of the Ebrumede Police Post would be fished out and brought to book.
The governor, who immediately left Abuja on hearing the unfortunate incident, lamented the death of the women and prayed God to grant their families fortitude to bear the enormous lose of their loved ones.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after visiting the scene of the accident and the Ebrumede Police Post that was partly torched by irate mob, he said, “My heart goes out to the families of these women who lost their lives in this most unfortunate way. I pray the good Lord to grant them the strength to bear this lose.”
Nevertheless, Uduaghan decried the razing of the Ebrumede Police outpost by angry youths protesting the death of the women, noting that the act was most barbaric and uncalled for when the cause of the accident was still unknown.
He said, “It (action of the youth) is erratic, people should not take laws into their hands; you cannot just come and burn a police station that was donated by a community because you are upset. It is not right and I do not think the community would be happy that the station has been burnt.
“We shall get to the bottom of this matter and anybody who is involved if there were policemen that were pursuing the tanker or those involved in the burning down of this police station we shall get them,” he added.
Already, the governor revealed that the police have arrested some persons in connection with the incident, adding that he had also discussed with the chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Mr. Peter Abugewa, over the incident.
