Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has directed the State Board of Internal Revenue to within six months issue tax clearance certificate to all public officers paying tax in the state.

Dr. Uduaghan who gave the directive at a stakeholders meeting on the payment of taxes in Asaba also directed civil servants, teachers, and local government employees among others to ask for their tax clearance certificate if within six months they are not given.

He specifically directed local government Chairmen and Councilors to pay their taxes correctly as underpayment would be counterproductive.

Explaining further he said: “Demand for your tax clearance certificate. It is essential for you and you need it for both political and administrative purposes. In fact, I am demanding for my own and let the Board give it to me now.”

The governor said the directive became necessary because his administration was determined to plug all leakages in the internal revenue generation process.

The governor said that the present step would expose ministries and other agencies and parastatals collecting taxes but not remitting them to government coffers.

Dr. Uduaghan said his administration would fish out all fraudulent people in the system and plug loopholes so that the internal revenue profile of the state would increase.

The governor who said moves were underway to check the expenditure pattern of Ministries, Departments and Agencies from the revenue they collect said efforts would be made to minimize waste and fraud. He therefore urged the Board of Internal Revenue to redouble its effort as internally generated revenue was dropping.

Dr. Uduaghan also explained that the state was diversifying its internal revenue generation system to bridge the gap between the shortfalls in Federal allocation.

Promising to partner with tax payers and make the payment of rates and taxes painless in the state, the governor assured Deltans that they would continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy. “My administration will not increase the pain of tax payers. I am going to partner with them. I like to remind our people that the more internal revenue we get the more our federal allocation, so we shall improve tax collection gradually,” he said.

The state commissioner for Finance Mr. George Orogun said the stakeholders meeting was organized to rob minds and address the bottlenecks in the system.

Mr. Orogun charged Ministries, Departments and agencies to brace up to the challenge and meet their targets to increase the overall revenue of the state.

While urging all tax collecting agencies to be mindful of tax laws, he disclosed that the state government would reinvigorate effort to increase revenue collected from the informal sector.

The Commissioner also appealed to security operatives and the judiciary to assist tax collectors in enforcing tax laws in the state.
