DELTA PLANS NEW TOWNS FOR OKERENKOKO, UGBORODO

• AS UDUAGHAN GETS ONOSODE’S KUDOS OVER ASABA AIRPORT
A meeting of the Delta State Vision 2020 council held in Asaba with Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan saying that a committee for the development of Okerenkoko and Ugborodo New Towns, both in Warri South West Local Government Area will be inaugurated this week.
Governor Uduaghan who announced this in his opening remarks at the meeting that held at Unity Hall, Government House, stated that the building of the new towns will entail the demolition of all existing structures.
He said that structural drawings of the new towns were already in place, adding that the exercise would be extended to other damaged communities in due course but with the availability of funds.
Both Okerenkoko and Ugborodo, alongside a few other communities in Gbaramatu area of Warri South West Council area were destroyed in the wake of the May 13, 2009 clash between men of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) and Militants.
The governor posited that there was need to deal with the issue of proper funding of interventionist agencies like the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as a way of dousing post amnesty concerns.
Governor Uduaghan, who briefed council members on the activities and achievements of his administration in recent months, said that while emphasis was being given to the development of sea and airports to stimulate a non-oil dependent economy, designated areas have been earmarked in Asaba for the building of warehouse by private investors.
Also, he said clusters have been identified for industrial development, and added that an area has been earmarked for the Warri industrial park.
In the areas of power, the governor revealed that the Federal Government was poised to generating 220 mega watts and 200 mega watts respectively from the under utilized Sapele and Ughelli power stations.
He made it clear that the ultimate goal of his administration was the economic growth of the state stressing that Delta State was already collaborating with other states of the South-South for purpose of economic integration.
Meanwhile, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode and other members of the Delta State vision 2020 Council have commended Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for his vision in embarking on the Asaba International Airport Project.
The council members spoke to correspondents in Asaba while on an inspection visit of the airport project with the governor.
Deacon Onosode who spoke first said the project is a catalyst in the development of the state.
The renowned boardroom guru noted that the vantage location of the Asaba Airport will serve both Delta and neighboring states with accruing economic benefits.
On her part, the Minister of State for Works, Chief (Mrs.) Grace Ekpiwhre, said by embarking on the project, “Delta State is set to actually develop along its vision.”
Chief Ekpiwhre who was a former Head of Service in the state commended the state’s previous and present leadership for the conceptualization and execution of the project, adding that what has happened has shown that government is continuity.
Former Delta State representative on the board of the NDDC, who also spoke, Prof. Victor Peretomode, described the airport project as “marvelous” and has shown that Governor Uduaghan is a “transformation leader”.
He said, as a concrete fundamental project, the airport when operational, will be pivotal to the social-economic development of the state.
In his brief remark, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan told the Delta State Vision 2020 members that the airport project is intended to be one of the legacies his administration will bequeath of Deltans.
Areas inspected by the council members who were also at the New Government House complex, were the runway, the Terminal building and the control tower.
