Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan yesterday visited the Headquarters of the Naval Logistic Command and Mobile Police (MOPOL) Squad 51 Base both in Oghara, headquarters of Ethiope West Local Government Area, where he assured them that the state government was keen to urgently tackle the problem of accommodation and other logistics to enable them settle down promptly.
At the Naval Logistic Command Headquarters, Governor Uduaghan was received by the Flag Officer, Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade and was conducted round the administrative block which is over 90 percent completed, and the jetty.
The governor was earlier at the Naval Barrack and was briefed by one of the contractors, Barrister Joshua Atikpakpa, who said additional funds were needed to complete the barrack project.
On his part, Rear Admiral Arogundade told the governor that about 340 ratings and officers of the Logistic Command were already in Oghara while an equal number will be posted there once accommodation was fully provided.
At the MOPOL 51 Base, the governor was conducted round by the commander, Sylvester Uzuofuna (SP), who also briefed him about the logistic problems faced by his command.
Addressing the officers and men of MOPOL 51, Governor Uduaghan thanked them for their performance since their arrival, noting that for the short period they have stayed, they have made some difference in the protection of lives and properties in the state.
Governor Uduaghan also enjoined the Mobile Policemen to cooperate and mix with their host community so as to promote a healthy relationship between the Base and the local people.
Fielding questions with Government House Correspondents at the end of the visits, the governor acknowledged that issue of accommodation for the new MOPOL Base was more problematic “as there is nothing on ground.”
He said that as part of efforts to enhance their efficiency, the government will provide both the MOPOL 51 Base and the NAVAL Logistics Command Headquarters with vehicles.
Governor Uduaghan also acknowledged that although theoretically the Federal Government should be responsible for providing the needs of the two security outfits, Delta State, as chief host, cannot afford to just stand aloof and wait.
He however admitted that the financial burden of providing assistance to both the Naval Logistics Command and the MOPOL Base was tasking, but assured that the State government will do its best.
